The QR code was not designed for restaurant menus or marketing campaigns. It was invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara, an engineer at Denso Wave, a subsidiary of Toyota. Denso Wave's manufacturing lines needed a way to track automotive parts faster than the standard barcodes of the era allowed. Hara's team set out to build a code that could hold more data, be read from any orientation, and be scanned quickly even when printed small on a component. The result, drawing loosely on the black-and-white grid layout of the game Go, was the two-dimensional matrix barcode we now call the QR code, short for "Quick Response."
